I thank Mrunal sir for being such a down to earth and a kind person and for taking out time for the interview and sharing so many experiences and knowledge regarding photography. I found the interview very interesting I hope you guys too like it.
So this is like how our conversation took place..
1)What sparked your desire to become a photographer? Since when are you into this field?
Photography was always my hobby from a very young age and I loved doing it. So I turned my hobby into a career. If you love your work you'll never wait for weekend or hate Mondays! I started as a photographer in 1992.
2)Your inspiration?
My mom. She's my hero . She always had faith in me and trusted my dreams. She supported me everytime I needed her and she's the person behind my success. Pictures of Suresh Natrajan (Indian fashion photographer) inspire me a lot. He's one of the finest photographers in the industry.
3)Which camera, equipments do u use for shoots?
I am currently using Canon 5D mark 3 and Nikon 0800E & a set of all the best lens available. One important tool that is the light meter . I always use it.
4)What is the ideal time for shooting outdoors?
Anywhere around and between 7 to 10 in the morning and 4 to 6.30 in the evening is good for shooting outdoors. Taking the sun's position into consideration is important for a perfect picture if your planning to shoot outdoors.
5)Ever faced any rejections? How did you deal with it?
We all face challenges and rejections in the beginning of our careers. All you have to do it trust yourself , be confident and have patience . If you don't trust in yourself no one else will.
6)High point of your career?
When I did the film TUM BIN. It was my biggest achievement and i'll be doing few more films in the near future.
7)How important is professional training to become a photographer?
Buying a DSLR camera will make you a photographer but not a PROFESSIONAL photographer!!
Yes professional training is necessary specially before entering this fashion world. Doing a course from a reputed photography school and internship under a professional photographer for atleast 2-3 years will give you a really good experience and improve your skills.
8)A memorable experience .
Shooting with Sachin Tendulkar was a very good experience. I got an offer from an agency to shoot for Sachin but I had prior commitments for the same day . Even though I was being paid more to shoot for sachin I had to turn the offer down.. But after a few days I was fortunate enough to get a shoot done with Mr. Sachin Tendulkar! May be our stars matched ! :)
9)If not a photographer what would have you been?
Would have been nothing (laughs ). I was always passionate about photography and since when I started thinking about my career, photography was always in my head.
10)Your connections with your client?
I make sure I make my clients comfortable when I shoot with them. I meet them before the shoot to discuss and finalise everything about the shoot so that they know me and my work well.
11)How important is photoshop ?
I don't really believe in photoshopping and editing . Pictures taken from a right angle in the right light don't require any editing. Being in a fashion industry photoshopping cannot be ignored though . I use my editing software if its necessary.
12)How important are portfolios in making a modelling career?
Portfolios play a very important role . Looking at a portfolio a person can decide the angles, features and potential of a model .If one wants to go into modelling or acting make sure you invest in a good photographer . A good portfolio can be your first step to success.
13)Do your clients feel that your fees is just too much ?
People who have knowledge and know the worth don't feel so ..but I do come across people who think that I charge too much . I have the best set of makeup artist costume designers and other crew members so that I can make a perfect shot .We don't charge only for a click but we have to look after the travelling to the location ,costumes , makeup , equipments ,our time ,arranging the set , editing work after shoot ,food for crew and so many things..
13)Tips to the pursuing fashion photographers.
a)Do not come here just for glamour .. I know many people who come in this industry just for the sake of meeting stars and aren't focused on their work!
b)Professional training is necessary to acquire good skills and internship for a good experience . Work as an intern for atleast 2 -3 years( 2 to 3 years is not too much as there's a lot to learn about this field). Models and stars are been paid a huge amount for every minute they stand in front of your camera. You therefore have to be experienced and quick at work.
c)Don't click for free.
Don't let your friends and family and relatives take you for granted by asking you to click them.. Charge them even if its a nominal amount or your not a professional yet. You should know your worth.
d)Many photographers focus more on location and costume and angles but not the light meter. Its is a very very important tool. Study the light meter and the lights at different time of the day..
e)Have patience ,be confident and trust yourself.
